SUMMARY:Paul Tillich and the Dynamics of Faith
DESCRIPTION:Paul Tillich (1886-1965) was one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century. His philosophical theology had a tremendous influence in the fields of philosophy\, anthropology\, psychology\, religious studies and Christian theology. This course examines the thought and impact of Tillich's writings through a comparative religious approach. Subjects to be examined include: the role and function of religious language with its use of symbol\, metaphor and myth\, the phenomenology of religious experience and the existential nature of faith. Instructor Professor May teaches courses in geology and anthropology at Peninsula College. He also teaches courses in geology\, Islam\, Buddhism and Rumi for the Community Education program at Peninsula College and for the Academy of Lifelong Learning\, Western Washington University at Olympic College\, Poulsbo. Dann received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from the University of Washington (1978 and 1980) and his M.A. in philosophy from the University of North Texas (1993). Before pursuing his teaching career\, he worked as an exploration geologist with the Standard Oil Company in Dallas. Dann was recently seated for a three year term as the Alternate Chair for Education\, Olympic Coast National Marine Advisory Board\, NOAA.
